Our Beginnings
Wiseland Services has been dedicated to improving the energy efficiency and environmental quality of homes since its beginning in 1995, serving as a technical advisor to the American Lung Association for their Health House '96 project house in Huntsville, Alabama. Since that beginning -- showcasing that energy efficiency and good indoor air quality were both achievable, with attention to design and material usage -- Wiseland Services has developed the EQSMARTE approach to building design and construction, expanding on energy efficiency and environmental quality to also address maintainability, accessibility, and usability.
Health House '96
Wiseland Services began in 1995 as a technical advisor to the American Lung Association when Huntsville, Alabama was selected as one of six sites in the United States for construction of a demonstration Health House(r). The house successfully demonstrated that energy efficiency and good indoor air quality could both be achieved, with careful attention to design, construction, and materials. Following the conclusion of that project Wiseland Services renovated an existing house that had numerous issues relating to energy efficiency and environmental quality, as a demonstration of how existing houses (even those with significant issues) could be renovated to meet the Health House criteria.

Features
Located in the Hampton Cove neighborhood in Huntsville, the Health House(r) was designed to blend in with the traditionally constructed houses around it. Looking at the house doesn't reveal the special features that address environmental quality and energy efficiency. Those features include improved insulation, HEPA-type air filtration, whole house water filtration, hardwood or tile floors, no- or low-VOC paints and furnishings, efficient HVAC, and improved sealing to minimize infiltration of unconditioned outside air.
